Tinka Bechert’s solo exhibition Metamorphosis reflects on global and political change and how it affects people’s inner lives.
Carefully constructed compositions of colour and form offer new insights into transformative processes, echoing the intricacies of contemporary life.
The dilemma of moving between being and semblance propels the work forward, both in terms of its appearance and content. Organic plant-like shapes and fragments of the human body reach out from the work, erasing the boundaries between figurative and abstract painting.
The artist reflects on the coarsening of society in contrast to the personal empathy of our everyday lives. As the world crumbles, humans seek reassurance in national and social constructs, searching for paths to follow amongst the chaos of possibilities.
Bechert´s formalistic juggling of collage-, print-techniques and painting reflects these complexities. The work affords a wider perspective while simultaneously blocking out impenetrable areas through flattened grids, as if to demarcate a small few yet clear, boundaries.
Tinka Bechert places her highly original painting style in this dynamic oscillation between poles where tenderness and ferocity exist side by side. Soft layers of glaze meet expressive painterly gesture, saturated colour and volume and depth are counteracted by flattened graphic elements. Out of this multi-faceted stylistic richness arises a dynamic artistic approach that represents the central concern: the changes in the world around us aren’t shallow and simplistic- they must be appreciated in all their glorious complexity in order for us to react and function in our complex contemporary realities- both on a personal and political level.
This comprehensive exhibition of new works is Tinka Bechert´s first Solo Exhibition of paintings in Berlin. On January 26th, the artist will host a talk at galerie gerken to which you are cordially invited.
