Max Richter’s paintings evolve their effective power in fluctuating between figurative and abstract pictorial language – a concrete outline disappears and so does their interpretation in the abstract form of the contexts, which leads to an association chain that can be moved freely in the pictorial space. The two-dimensional, naive conception of the painting’s motifs stands in contrast to the heavy pasty paint application, which is laid over the canvas relief- like. The settled forms lie nestled between mountains and valleys of paint and get an archaic symbolic character. The seriousness of composition and color choices face Richter’s irony dealing with it which gives the viewer of the artworks an access to a whimsical world where snowmen, hookahs, deities, pimps, baseball caps, flying moonfish, dudes picking their noses and prostitutes meet gangsters and the deep ocean.
Max Richter’s paintings tell us about a continuous definition and reversal of found solutions, new reflections and sought expression. In formal intuition, Richter begins his compositions, who always oscillate between objectivity and abstraction in the course of the artistic development process. At the moment of an objectness, Richter remains with a stressed two-dimensional conception, which in its flatness contrasts with the pasty plasticity of the color application. Without the intention of a grading of depth, objects and figures hover on the heavy painterly background and become emphasized by the dominant white or red-black color frame. The singularity of the picture elements does not present a concrete narration, which leads to a free association chain – the built causality of the viewer has its full legitimation. This autonomy lends the objects of Richter a symbolic character, an universality which, in its formal reduction, remembers abstract truths. The naive objectivity underlines this effect and reminds of the original expression of cave paintings. In his compositions, Richter formally and aesthetically approaches concepts of Expressionism, Cubism and Surrealism and incorporates the art-historical memory of the viewer, in order to break with this in the following moment studiously. Thus Richter uses the potentials of the picturesque tradition, but transforms them into and to his picture worlds. These, in turn, are based on the nostalgia of their own as well as the current youth culture and their means of self-production, which Richter visualizes in their absurdity with an ironic-cynical sense of humor. The bong as a medium of consumption appears in different contours, sometimes more clearly, in his pictures: whether free in the image space, shimmering in silver or in the hand of a red slippery figure as the center of the image – the repetition creates a new tradition and causes a tipping of the traditional perception and implementation of the genre of painting. With a strong line and free image creation, Richter reveals new directions.
