After the extensive exhibition near and far on the occasion of the Gallery Weekend in the spring of this year at galerie gerken, the artist Dieter Mammel continues this work series and extends it with current observations on social developments.
The sea and its reciprocal relationship with the human being acts as a complex carrier of meaning in Mammels painted works: As a calm surface, it erects secretly to a high wall in front of the individual, which cannot sense this symbol of dependence as the gaze is focus on the mobile phone raised to heaven. Searching for reception in the endlessness of the virtual world, the romantic seascape and the corresponding longing for distance and nearness at the same time, turn into a symbol of digital isolation: The desire to communicate, to express one’s owns concerns becomes a challenge in an era of fast moving media, but also bears the potential of initiative and participation. In this pictorial world the boat appears as a loyal companion, as an unimpressed safety in the storm, leading leads the searching one to new awareness and protecting him from the depths of the sea.
Whether the deluge is about to come or already happened, is being left open intentionally. Mammel allows the viewer an autonomous construction of time, content and perspective whereby the interpretation becomes an act of self-reflection.
Mammels oscillation between precise figuration and formal abstraction generates an immanent tension. His wet-in-wet technique on canvas requires an exceptional precision in the colour application, whereas the meandering outlines preserve in opposition to the plain parts of the canvas an undisguised lightness. The monochromy and the reduction of the material emphasize this aspect and deliver a direct access to the pictorial theme picture theme. In his works, Dieter Mammel builds bridges of dialog and shows the searching individual as well as the oncoming salvation based on the premise of widely opened eyes.
